Isaiah for Everyone
This past spring (2022) the Thursday night Bible study was a joint program between Wellesley Village Church and the Congregational Church of Weston. We read and discussed sections from First Isaiah (Isaiah 1-39) using the companion book “Isaiah for everyone” by John Goldingay. All were welcome to join, both newcomers and members.
Violence in the Hebrew Bible
Members of CCW partnered with the Bible study group at Wellesley Village Church, resourced by Village Church member Susan Sullivan and led by Pastoral Resident Rev. Megan Berkowitz, to study the theme of “Violence in the Hebrew Bible” this past fall and winter, October through the end of January 2022 on Thursday nights. Relevant to our lives as people of faith in the world today, this season’s Bible study group asked questions of how to make sense of morally questionable material in the Bible. In doing so, we hoped that we would together gain tools for interpreting the text, and through the text interpreting our world.
This Bible study was an opportunity to grow in faith and ask questions of ourselves and one another as we wrestled with the text in a community via Zoom.
The Apostle Paul
Last year, our Thursday Night Bible Study focused on The Apostle Paul (via Zoom). Few figures in Christian history are as complicated, controversial, and central as Paul. We read N.T. Wright’s biography of the Apostle, and a selection of his writings. We then discussed what Paul wrote, what he likely didn’t, and how the body of work that bears his name continues to inspire much-needed theological reflection. You may love him, you may hate him, but you cannot ignore him.
Our study was critical, historical, and personal, as we considered what Paul and his legacy means for the Church, and what his scripture means in our lives today.
